China is totally and utterly UNCOOL, unfortunately. The government, while pretending to be semi-capitalist and open to development, oppresses the people and allows corruption to run riot. Go somewhere else - don't spend your tourism dollars supporting their regime.

Of course it's cool. It seems your family is Chinese (or has a Chinese background). It'd be great to go with your grandma and visit China. Going back to where the older generations of your family is from is always cool. It not just about learning your grandma's country and history, but also appreciating it. Consider yourself lucky that you have a grandma who can take you to China and show you around. It's better than going there as a lost tourist and only visiting typical tourist places.

if you are going for the sightseeing and not be bothered by the poverty, then yeah!

but if you are looking for shopping and the "urban" scene, then I wouldn't 100% recommend it.

China is an enigma all by herself, and as much as I respect other people's viewpoints regarding her political situation, you really are not in a position to comment on China until you have been there. I too was like you prior to my first visit. Yes there are things that I would love to change, but then there are equally as many about the USA that I would like to change too.

Should you have the opportunity to visit China, jump at the chance. It will be an experience for you like no other and will open up your heart and mind. You will come back less xenophobic and a new appreciation. Make sure you learn a few key phrases (thank-you, please, how to ask for things etc...) and you will gain much favor. Your grand-ma sounds 'cool' for wanting to show you her roots.
xiè xie 谢谢
