Why do so many Chinese dislike Japanese?

2009-01-20 3:49 pm
Whenever I am in China, many many people tell me they hate the Japanese. They say all these bad things about Japanese.

Then I come to Japan and see that almost none of these comments are true.

The Chinese claim they hate the Japanese because of what happened in World War II. However, I am of the opinion that this is not the real reason. Most of the people who were around in World War II are now dead, I don't see how this is relevant to hating modern day Japanese. By analogy, most Jewish people do not hate modern day Germans.

I personally think that the hatred has a lot to do with the green eyed monster - yes jealousy. Japan is a world leader in so many fields, a rich rich country.

China on the other hand is nothing more than a neverending source of cheap labour for the world. And yes I realise that China's economy is growing very quickly, but this just means they are becoming richer, it does not mean they are rich. They are still a way poorer country than Japan, and this will be the case for many decades to come (possibly even longer).

What do others think the source of this hatred is?

Chinese from China have very strong nationalistic and traditional views. Due to their upbringing, they tend to feel about certain things as strongly as their ancestors felt.

And thus, until today, the Chinese in China still hold grudges against Japan.

However, the reason why you do not see this in Japan is due to the fact that WWII was not included in the Japanese History textbooks. And thus have allowed the younger generations to not follow in their ancestor's footsteps.

I am a Chinese that is fluent in Japanese. I have to agree, that from the way things look, China cannot possible overtake Japan in a 100 years.

"What do you think the source of this hatred is?"
It's simple, the China Chinese culture is such that there is an "inbuilt" strong sense of feeling for their ancestors.

You have to try living with a traditional Chinese to understand this fact.(:

It's largely because of the Japanese attrocities during WWII. I don't think it's jealousy. The Chinese saw China as the center of the universe and non-Chinese people as barbarians. It used to be the most advanced country in the world.

The Chinese and Japanese do not look alike. They have distict physical features.

Its because no Japanese government since WWII has apologised or even acknowledged the Japanese conquests of China. The Japanese schools apparently dont even teach it.
Japan unlike Germany has never taken responsibility for WWII and the war crimes committed.

Yes, the comparison between Jews/Germans and Chinese/Japanese is a good one.

Germans have faced their own history while the Japanese just cannot do it. Germans acknowledge wrongdoing while Japanese still make excuses and maintain a state of denial.

If I kill your mum and make up all sorts of excuses to justify my act, you'd be pissed off too. On the other hand, if I sincerely repent, you might forgive me.

I do agree that Chinese in China display a remarkable hatred for the Japanese. However, it is getting to be like a case of hating-you-coz-i-am-so-used-to hating-you. Not so much to do with the riches of Japan.

That happen in the war and that it has been repeatedly engrained through out there adult life that the Japanese did bad things to the Chinese.

It is mostly the atrocities committed by Japanese during the world wars. But then they dislike so many nations. I think ultra nationalism is also a major reason to blame for that.

fried green crack baby is right. It's not just about the wars and what they did to the Chinese, but it's the fact that until now, there has not been any apologies nor acknowledgement of what happened. That's also the reason why many other Asian nations don't like the Japanese. It's as if taking the entire black slavery part of history out of the US history books, wiping away all the apologies and acknowledgements and pretending that slavery never happened. How will the African American population feel? How will their ancestors in Africa feel?

China has been invaded by Japan on at least 4 occasion through history. We in N. America never heard of many of the things that happened.
As a Canadian I've only heard of a few things,eg. when Hong Kong fell. Canadian Soldiers were brutally butchered, and that's fact! Why don't we hear more. Because the USA wanted Japan as a friend right after the war. That and the real Bad guys hid and let there juniors take the blame. Many of the real big Japanese firms started with the second World war. They amassed huge fortune from the lands they conquered and then were able to hide it.
Are the Japanese or friends? Only until they don't need you!
Sounds a lot like most countries, doesn't it.
PS I work with a lot of Dane's, Belgians, and other European people that remember WW2 They still hate the Germans. Do the Jewish? I'll bet they still remember as well, and still hate!

In most cases neighboring countries tend to have a history of conflict, and hence a dislike. In the case of China, Korea and Japan, they have fought many wars through history. The most recent is the occupation of Korea and China prior to WWII, WWII itself and the Korea war (where China invaded and fought on the NK side). They are also somewhat similar in culture and ethnicity, and that can also lead to conflict. They tend to compete on many fields, from commerce and culture to political and military power. The similarity and small distance make it natural to compare themselves to each other, this leads to disagreements and dislike. Neighbours also tend to have competing territorial claims, as we have seen with the recent fishing boat incident near some disputed islands south of Japan. Here a small incident has escalated into a beginning trade war between China and Japan. Lastly the cultures of all those countries tend to focus on honour, and in a conflict both sides are afraid of "loosing face". This can cause small conflicts to spiral out of control, since compromises will always lead to some criticism.
