Explain why metal nitrates rapidly turn into colourless liquids on first heating, whilst on further heating become white solids again, before they decompose.

When heating, the metal nitrate dissolves in its water of crystallization. Further heating would vaporize the water, and the temperature is still below the melting point of the metal nitrate and also below the temperature of decomposition. Therefore, the nitrate changes back to solid without decomposition. Then, the metal nitrate decomposes when it is heated to the temperature of decomposition..
