Where is the best beach in the states/East coast?

I've been to Mexico, Rivera Maya, and I LOVED the beaches down there. Is there a beach in the States that is comparable? It doesn't have to be East coast, but I'm assuming the East states are less expensive to visit.

Fort DeSoto Park Beach, near St. Petersburg, FL has been voted the best beach in the world.

Siesta Key near Sarasota, FL has an awesome beach. For a more New England-y feel try Gooseberry Beach in Newport, RI (blurb about it below)
