Ok so i have been reading alot about idenity theft. Is it me or is this just a fad in our country right now, blown way out of proportion. Of course i know it is a danger and it COULD possible happen, but just because you throw a hard drive, or an unshredded peice of paper in ur trash bag with all your other household scrunge does not mean there is a line of hobos waiting out side your door. does anyone else agree?

A good analogy is a Burglar. We all know that there are burglars in the world. But there is not a line of them just waiting to break into your house. However, if you leave your front door wide open your chances of getting robbed is a lot greater than if you had your door closed and locked.

The same thing goes for Identity Theft. If you throw away documents or anything with your personal information on them a thief could get them, but if you "lock" the door by making sure your information is destroyed before you throw it away your chances are reduced significantly.

Just as not every house that leaves their door open would be robbed, not every person who does not make sure their personal information is protected will be a victim of Identity theft. Just that the chances are higher that it would happen.

Well you have to take precautions. You never know when it could happen. Yes, the chances of it happening to you are very unlikely, but what if it does?

Do you think people who get raped think it would happen to them? or ones in abusive relationships? What about having your car stolen?
I know a couple who BOTH got their car stolen.

A fad. Another money making business...(Life-Lock)...taking advantage of peoples fears. Besides, with the economy the way it is good luck stealing my identity...not much there to steal!

Well, I will tell you that I had someone using my information, that they stole from out of the trash can and or mail box. So be careful because it can happen. I was with Bank of America and they allowed to someone to gain access to my account and blocked me completely from it. I had to go through so many red tags to get my account back. And honestly, they are still showing me as the negative here. It is said that I owe them like 10 grand. I just changed banks.
