Kowloon is more affordable than Hong Kong Island. In terms of shopping places, I do think there are more affordable shops in Kowloon, but I think both offer the same in terms of quality, quantity and variety.

In terms of getting from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, the ferry is still the cheapest way. From Tsim Sha Tsui to Central, it only costs for as low as HK$1.7, but you can also use the MTR, but I don't recommend it since it's so expensive (it's around HK$7, I think).

Honestly, it doesn't really matter. You should probably be spending more time in Kowloon, but HK's just so tiny, whereever you are it doesn't take you long to reach your destination. Hop in the MTR and you'll be anywhere in no time. So you can have all the fun you want in Kownloon and still stay in HKI for the accommodation. I mean they got a killer ocean view. I've been living here for 4 years now, so feel free to send me a message if there's something you'd like to know.

Kowloon is cheaper, its closer to shops that have bargins. Hong Kong island is a little more expensive with shops that have better quality that cost more. It doesnt take long by the train to get to between them. the train is the fastest way. also you can take a taxi over the bridge to get between the two. To me, i like hong kong island more. but kowloon has its advantages to. Btw, i would use the subway/train transit system for transportation. Buy an Octopus card if your staying there for a week or longer. you can store money of then and just scan them to go on the subway. Its cheaper then taxi. and you can redeem your money for the card before you leave.

I stayed in the Mirador Mansions when I was in HK--basically the same idea as the Chunking mansions, on the south end of kowloon, a little scuzzy but cheap. You can easily get from there to HK island either by underground or on the star ferry (the crossing takes eight minutes and costs $2.2 or $2.4 HKD which is to say nothing.

it's really depends on what u need to buy & where u want to go. but i wil say Kowloon more conevenience especially Tsim Sha Tsui area as the tube station (MTR) is just rite there on the Nathan Road. u can travel almost like everywhere in just 15-25 mins. if u r going to the Peak or Ocean Park on HK island...just MTR fr TST --> HK side..... it's just 1 station if u r going to the Ocean Park n 2 stations if u r heading to the Peak. then of cos, u hv to shift their shuttle 4 going to the attractions.

both evening market & the day market (full of hawkers) r also on Kowloon side.....it's also a few stations to go fr TST. less than 25 mins i guess.

not say HK side do not hv shopping area but it's just splited into diff zone... not as 'center' as TST. the largest mall in HK also on Kowloon side - the Harbour City Mall.

It depends on a lot of things. If you want to be in the center of all the attractions, then Hong Kong Island would be better. I personally like Kowloon because it's more affordable. There are many ways to go from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island: MTR (fastest, most popular), ferry (longer, but cheapest and you get great view of the Victoria Harbour) and taxi (via tunnel, the West Tunnel is a toll tunnel, which will be added onto your cab fare).

Depends on what your looking for, plus where in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Also remember that Kowloon encompasses a bit of the Northern land like Shatin. Hong Kong Island has more high end stores and businesses, but not really attractions. Kowloon is the main tourist place in Hong Kong with a lot of malls and shops. It really depends on what you're looking for. Like Hong Kong Island has the conference centre, the business district, Ocean Park, and a few other attractions. But Kowloon also has some attractions including the tallest mountain in Hong Kong. I'd say Kowloon is better since the location is between Hong Kong Island, New Territories, and Lantau. If you're travelling between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon you can travel via taxi, bus, car, ferry, or the subway. From one side to another it takes under 10 minutes by subway and around 5 minutes by car/taxi/bus depending on the conditions. Ferry takes longer and includes a wait, but is the cheapest at round 50 cents
