Hey, I play water polo :o, and maybe I can come up with some tips. It always helps if you can swim, and since you are already going somewhere that teaches you, you'll be fine, it takes a lot of experience to get good. You should try to start building strong legs, because in water polo you've probably heard that you have to tread in the water for a long time.
They will teach you this stroke called egg beater, it's probably gonna be confusing at first but you'll get use to it.
Then you'll be learning about swimming with your head out of the water, how to catch the ball with one hand in the water and to throw the ball. If you want you can practice throwing a big maybe basketball if you can, like you pitch a softball, because that's how you pass and shoot a water polo ball.
