every answer so far is WRONG!

during the Chinese New year, many places close..so there's not much to do.

the run up to the Chinese year is very vibrant and a BIG social Event. but on New Years day and the following 3-5 days after, restaurants charge Extra 20%-25% on the bill..

best visit a week or so before the New Year, or 1 week after the New Year.

i think of Taipei is the ultimate city which you would be able to adventure the classic lifestyle of China. what's greater, Singapore and Penang(Malaysia) are sturdy options too. Hongkong is purely too British.

Oh...you'll love it. You'll be in town for the big fireworks over the Victoria Harbor. Hong Kong puts on great fireworks show each year!

You might have problems hitting the malls or museums/attractions on Jan 26 as most businesses are closed on that day (the first day of the new year), but restaurants will be opened. But because Hong Kong is a tourist city, so businesses will resume operation after Jan 26.

If you're not afraid of crowds and you wish to see how the older generation celebrates Chinese New Year, I recommend trekking out to the New Territories or the islands (Lantau, Tai-O). There are many villiages there still and you'll get to see the celebration. Also, again, if you're not afraid of crowds, go visit the temple. People actually go there on the night before Chinese New Year in attempt to be the first to give offerings to the gods. One good temple to go to is Wong Tai Sin. Bring your camera!
