that's actually a very good question. I've wondered about that myself, because when I had the flu, my mom said it's good to drink hot coke with lemon and ginger. Not sure why, but it did help clear the congestion and stuffy nose.

When I first heard about this I was very surprised myself. Its supposed to be an "Old Chinese Remedy". When you boil Coke with Ginger and some Lemon its supposed to help you with a cold and a cough. I have never tried it myself but I am sick at this moment so I might just try it.

It's just because it's cold out. When it's winter you MUST drink hot liquids. One time I was in Beijing at a BDay party and a guy ordered a hot beer. They actually put it in the microwave and it was bending. When he opened it, it exploded everywhere and I said "That's going to be disgusting you know" for the tenth time since the order, but he said "It's cold out, it's bad for my health to drink cold fluid" and he drank. He threw up in his mouth a little at first, but forced it down and finished the whole can, I'm sure because he didn't want to let me be right.
It's just about the old wives tale they pass on where if it's hot you drink cold fluid, if it's cold you drink hot fluid. If you don't it throws off you Qi and then you've really gone and done it.

Really? Never saw that before. I love cold beer and cold coke myself.

But regarding drinking hot tea, coffee, or hot soup when the weather is cold out makes sense. Helps the body to maintain stable core temperature. Just like when it's hot out, there's nothing like icy cold drinks.
