You will end up paying more if you use wire transfer rather than ATM Withdrawal.
Based on your information, HSBC HK is charging HKD$15-25 per transaction for ATM Withdrawal. However, even you are using HSBC as both outgoing wire and incoming wire, both HSBC are going to hit you with fees (the only exception is you have a Premier Account). That fee will be at least HKD$200.
Therefore, if you plan well, your family can get you the money with the lowest cost.

Dear Mr. grandtom,
Please check with Wells Fargo, HSBC Bank USA, and HSBC HK and see how much they will hit you when you use wire transfer. They will not called themselves banks if they are not FOR PROFIT.

Let me drop you a hint.
Confirm the fee with both sides of HSBC.
Then try to estimate your fee (by both methods) in a specific time frame.
Then you will know the answer then.

Let make an example.
You withdraw $2000 regardless for each month.
Based on my estimation, wire transfer will cost you around hkd$160.
But it will only cost you HKD$100 at most when you withdraw from ATM (once per week).
Then you know the maths.

The exchange rate in your case won't make a hugh issue because the amount is so small.
