conference - 比meeting formal, 而且比較嚴肅, 通常只有係一間公司開會議先叫 「conference」

meeting - 比較普遍, meeting 內容可以係任何野 ~ 通常meeting 可以指朋友之間的約會, also可以指公司的會議

conference : (正式)會議;討論會

As you can see, they both mean "會議". However, meeting usually lasts for about 1 to 5 or 6 hours but a conference may lasts for a week or so.

Conference can also mean 討論會. This is where people talk or debate among themselves and come out a solution for a certain issue. In a conference there may have several issues. And so 1 to 6 hours is not enough to accomplish them all.

A meeting is like where people meet each other. And it is more likely a friendly meeting. In a conference some people may intentionally attack others in words. However when having a meeting people tend to talk calmly and politely.

Here, what we mean formal and informal is that. A meeting can be held in anytime, any place. However for a conference you will have to prepare many things. And you will know where a conference will be held, and at what time. You will know all those information around a week (or a month) before the conference starts. Another words, a conference has a certain place, certain time.

Therefore, a conference is more like a formal meeting, where a meeting can be said to be a "casual meeting".
