How do I become a dressmaker?

I love dresses and I 'm very creative. I love drawing dresses and I'd like to make a career out of it but I don't think that it really offered in many colleges. I'd like to learn how to sew properly and make proper designs. How do I get into it?

Hi, you don't say how old you are but there are plenty of fashion courses in colleges and universities. Patterns are a good way to practice on but these courses will teach you how to actually create your own patterns and then you will be able to alter and adapt patterns to suit all shapes, sizes and styles. They should also teach you about what fabrics to use. You could also apply for work experience at dress/fashion companies.
Good luck!

I learned how to be a dressmaker at college. Firstly at night school and then on a part time 2 year course for City and Guilds Fashion. If there is nothing local you could look into doing a correspondence course. Google home study and that should lead you on the right track. I didnt do dressmaking this way but I did do interior design and it was excellent. You dont say if you reside in the UK but if you do Regent Academy of Fine Arts in London may have something. I run my own business as a curtain maker now and make a tidy living at it so dont give up and good luck!

Check out your community college. Ours has an excellent fashion design department. You could take courses over the summer.

A lot of places does evening classes in dressmaking.

Myself i just started buying patterns & kinda taught myself!! I have my own dressmakers dummy & now have started designing & making alot of my own designs.

Try looking at regional colleges & art & design colleges, i'm sure some of them will have courses to interest you.
