Mutual Recognition Agreements

The former mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) which the Institute signed in May 2000 with the CPA Australia and The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) expired on 30 June 2005.

With the aim of bringing uniformity and consistency to future standard of admission to the Institute’s membership, the Institute introduced an evaluation process for reviewing overseas qualifications for mutual recognition purposes.

CPA Australia
The Independent Assessors finalized their review report on 24 March 2005. Following a fruitful negotiation, the Institute signed a new mutual recognition agreement with CPA Australia on 24 June 2005. Details of the agreement and the conditions for members of each body to join the other are outlined here.

ACCA
Agreement for recognition arrangements with ACCA
The Institute signed an agreement for recognition arrangements with ACCA on 22 August 2006, setting out eight conditions for ACCA members who want to join the Institute. This new agreement and the others signed in the past few years rationalise the Institute's approach to how CPAs in Hong Kong are qualified. Mutual Recognition Agreement with Canadian CAs
On 27 July 2005, the Institute officially signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in New York. The new agreement gives our CPA QP members - for the first time - practicing rights in Canada. QP is now recognised on five continents - Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.
