written word 不用複數，因為它代表著記載文字。

第一句話可以用 What. 因為他在中間用了 but。在這裡的意思是，我們的過去不就是連續的夢想嗎？如果要用您說的 Isn't, 那麼就不能在中間說 but. 就要變成 “Isn't our past a succession of dreams?" 但是這麼說，就少了 滷蛋想要的“不就是”的感覺。

第二句話，絕對不能用 what。What 通常只能用在句子的前面 （像是：What we know will make us smarter.)，不能用在 all 的後面。

致於為什麼是written word 而不是 written words: 因為 the written word 在這裡的用法是代表了記載文字，它不需要變成複數。如果您要用 written words, 那就要把 the 去掉，變成：Mankind owes all that we are today to written words. 兩句話的差異很微妙，但是差一個字就會把對的句子變成錯的咯。

如果您看這個學術網站的名字, 您會發現，它是 "Escaping from the Sea: Transforming the Written Word"。因為他加了 the，所以要用單數。
