I would suggest the couple weeks after Chinese New Year, somewhere in early Feb. You want to avoid the travel rush of people going back home for the holidays as well as going back to work the week after. Chinese New Year is Jan 26, so you can expect Jan 23 on would be super busy with air and train travel. Chinese New Year is celebrated up to a month after the first day, but most people are back at work a week later, so if you go the two weeks after Chinese New Year, you will still be able to see all the nice decorations but don't have to deal with the crowds and rush.

go somewhat greater afield, %. up a final minute cancellation to an Asian holiday spot, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, etc. you would be outdoors the monsoon season so ought to get solid climate. lodging might properly be airborne dirt and mud decrease priced or despite your funds enables. residing would be lots greater fee-effective than Europe, so what you spend on the fare, you shop on the different component of the coin. think of of the adventure as properly!

CNY is only Jan26-28... and most of the shops stil opened during this festival. so no worry! if u can stay here over a week......maybe u can try Macau for a day trip or stay 1 nite there? it's gd to take a look at that Asia Las Vegas. n it's so convenience to travel between HK & Macau as they hv boat every 15 mins / 24 hrs.

Chinese New Year is on Jan.26 this year, so i suggest you to go there around 23. You can get everything settled before you encounter any inconvenience brought by the holiday.
