8x + 4 = 5x - 11
8x - 5x = -11 - 4
3x = -15
x = -5

Put the x's on one side and the constants on the other. When you are putting terms on the other side of the equal sign, you must do the inverse operation. Notice how the 5x becomes negative now that it's on the left side and 4 becomes negative when it is moved to the right side.

8x+4=5x-11
8x-5x=-11-4
3x=-15
x=-5 answer @(^_^)@

checking

8(-5)+4=5(-5)-11
-40+4=-25-11
-36=-36 correct

8x+4=5x-11
8x-5x=-4+(-11)
3x=-15
x= (-5)

8x + 4 = 5x - 11
8x - 5x = -4 - 11
3x = -15
x = -15/3
x = -5

You always want to get your like terms on the same sides. Which is why the first step would be to get your x's on the same side.
You want your x to be positive, so you take the smaller x and subtract it from both sides. You can do it either way, but in the final step it will help to avoid losing the negative sign just floating near the x.
8x-5x+4=-11
Then you subtract 4 from both sides to get the non-x terms together as well.
8x-5x=-11-4
Then you simplify by combining like terms.
3x=-15
Finally, you want to make your x have 1 as it's coefficient. Therefore, in this case, you will divide both sides by 3.
Your final answer is
x=-5

8x+4=5x-11

first move the xs to one side and the integers to the other
(minus 5x from each side and minus 4 from each side, so you get)

3x= -15

then divide both sides by 3 to get x by itself

x= -5

Move the x's to one side and isolate it.

3x = -15

x = -15/3 = -5
