Is it true that if you quit smoking cold turkey early during pregnancy, you could have a miscarriage?

I used to smoke approx. 1pack every 2 days. I just found out i'm pregnant. About 5 weeks along. Since I found out, I have had 2 cigarettes in about 4 days. I understand smoking at all can cause miscarriage, low birthweight, etc. I want to quit, but just finding out i'm pregnant and quitting smoking is all very emotional and stressful. What should I do? Quit cold turkey? I've also heard rumors that quitting cold turkey is bad for the baby? Please, I need help!

I smoked what you do for 15 years. I quit cold turkey and had no issues...when I told my doctor at my first appt he was very happy, didn't say anything about it being bad for me.
I honestly think that whole "it's too stressful on the baby" is used by people trying to justify just cutting down and not quitting completely.

You can do it! Good luck!!!

Yes, quitting cold turkey can cause stress, though not serious enough for a miscarriage. However, you're already cutting down a lot. In a few weeks, you may start to experience morning sickness and it's very likely that you'll find the taste of cigarettes unbearable (i used to drink 24oz or more of coffee a day and I now can't stand the smell of coffee and it's been like that for 3 months now). Just keep what you're doing - slowly wean yourself off cigarettes. Distract yourself with healthy foods is another thing to do, and so is going for short walks. Let your body tell you what it wants (food, fresh air, etc.) If you're now down to 2 in 4 days, I am sure it won't be long before you're down to 1 per week and then none at all. All the best!

When I found out I was pregnant, my doctor told me to gradually cut back and *eventually* quit smoking. I've known people who were told by their doctors to quit cold turkey. So, I'm not really sure. What I do know is that if you're having trouble quitting, your doctor should be able to help you come up with a smoking cessation plan. And please be very honest with your doctor about your smoking so that he or she can monitor you and your baby appropriately. Good luck quitting! I know it's hard and emotional, but I'm sure you can do it :-)

"Quitting smoking can be extremely difficult, but it is the very best thing you can do for your baby. If you stop smoking in the first trimester, the risk of low birthweight drops to a similar level as that for a nonsmoker. If you find that you can't quit completely, even cutting back on the number of cigarettes you smoke is a benefit to your baby."

It's for the babys best health that you stop! I found out I was pregnant at 3 weeks and I slowed down then completely stoped at 5 weeks! My baby is healthy. I'm 17w5d

Cold turkey can be bad for the baby due to the stress hormones and withdrawl you go thru. It wouldn't cause miscarriage tho.

Every smoker I know that got pg was told by their doc to wean themselves off slowly and not quit cold turkey.

If you're only having 1 cig every other day, that won't hurt anything. The docs also say you can have 1 drink a week without hurting anything. They just don't know where the threshold is for alcohol/nicotine to do harm so they say none is best (it is)....but a tiny amount won't hurt. There were millions of healthy babies born to women who smoked and drank normal amounts before they knew a lot could hurt.

You're doing fine.

I've never smoked but I've known a lot of people that do. My parents both smoked before. When my daddy passed away last year he & my mom were both trying to quit. The day he died I believe my mom said she had one cigarrette & after that, she hasn't had one since. There was also a lady I know where I work in a nursing center & she simply quit cold turkey. I've heard from a lot of people that quitting cold turkey is better because after so many days or whatever, you don't need them, you may want to do the motion but you don't feel that actual craving for them. I'm not really sure but if nothing else I would say you are making the right decision in quitting at all & I wish you the best of luck with that & with the baby.

i'm 10 weeks today and when I found out I was pg I quit with in a few days. but the reason I quit so fast was because I have the morning sickness that last all day and smoking just make it worse so It was feel worse then I normaly would and keep smoking or just quit and not feel so bad all day.. not a hard chioce at all. and I live in a house of smokers and my Boyfriend smokes.. and I found out when i was 4 weeks prego and havnt had one since I quit.
Also my friend who smoked while she was pg and her baby turned out fine they told her that if you try and quit after the first 3 months it can harm the baby more.
