since i was a kid i've always been good at sports... be it soccer, volleyball, badminton ETC.. but because i grew up in large family of 5 kids i wasn't one of those fortunate kids that got a chance to learn to skate and play hockey all of their childhood. i feel like i've never been given that chance and my potential is going to waste. I would do so much to be as lucky as my good friends that play hockey yet you talk to them and they don't even realize how lucky they are. Im very good at soccer but i don't have as much fun as i do when i play hockey.. i wake up in the morning and the only reason im happy about going to school is because i know im going to be playing floor hockey in gym class.. I just need some help as to how i can get my chance to do what i love and that's to play ice hockey,im 17 years old, in grade 12, plan to work my butt off during the summer to save some money, so remember money is an issue here. Any ideas?

Learn to skate; what running is to soccer...skating is to hockey.

You need skates. You can try ebay, or used stores for cheaper prices.

Most rinks have learn to skate programs that aren't that expensive.

Equipment...it's not cheap, even the used stuff.

im almost exaclty like you. i love hockey and i love playing floor hockey in gym, and thats wut kept me going. but i started at 12 and now im 14. but if u are thinking of goin to college on a hockey scholarship or even the nhl, its pretty late. cuz kids get scouted to the nhl even at 12, the latest at 18. and athletic scholarrships are a lengthly process, and u have to have a pretty impressice hockey background.

but, if its just for funn, then go for it!

I really regret goin to ice hockey too. like i said, when i started at 12, i was the only tall one falling down or checking myself in the boards. everryone else began hockey at a young age, like 2 or 3. and i felt isolated, especially cuz i was an asian girl.

but u should try to go to stores wuth used equipment and just try to ask a lot of quetions. And buy good equipment becuz after awhile, u dont want to find out that u bought crappy equipment and have to buy everything again! Thats wut happend to me cuz my mom was being cheap

go to ur local rinks and sign up for as many programs as u can to get better, whether it be houseleague, learn to skate, or something like that. And i mean AS MANY AS U CAN!! but at 17, the instructor are probably ur age...

Why dont u stick with soccer and sign up for a houseleague or competitive team. soccer competitive teams are about $600 per season, while for hockey, it is about $2500. (Mine was about $3000 considering the gasoline, extra uniforms and overnight hotels)

but trust me, if u start hockey, the first few weeks are tough, but u have to be really dedicated and commit and really give it 110% everytimes u step on the ice.for example, all the girls on my team have been playing for 5 yrs+, but when i tell them i only played for 2 yrs, theyr like wow, really? Thats cuz i gave all my effort into every practice and game.

And you can also consider private lesssons (although they are much more expensive) , but u learn quicker.

Anyways, this is a long answer, but it truely happend to me and i dont want u to make the same mistakes as i did. So good luck on your decision and your hockey career

Go to open skate in your town and rent skates. When you go to open skate it should be about $5. Borrow a stick from someone and do these drills:

Pass Receiving
Receive a pass with your hands out front to cushion the puck.

Puck Protection
Keep your body between the player trying to check you and the puck.
Turn the opposite direction from where you feel the pressure.

Puck Control 1
Don’t handle the puck too close to your body. It will force you to keep your head down.

Puck Control 2
Roll Your wrists to cup the cup on your stick, so the puck doesn’t roll off your blade.

Go to some hockey camps.

you might be a bit too late, considering you're already 17 yrs old. Most hockey players start when they are much younger and either go the junior/major junior or the college route. For the college route, you'll have to join some college hockey team, play good and hope that scouts will notice you. Good luck, hockey is a great sport!

start with skating, then move on to stickhandling and stopping, then work on shooting. but before shooting, passing.

Well, I hope you don't plan on being goalie and I hope you already know how to skate! I played ice hockey, goalie, for the first time yesterday. It's a lot of equipment and I couldn't even imagine playing in a real game. I played with little kids shooting on me, and although I loved it, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I'm pretty good at most sports, too, but street hockey (goalie) is way easier than ice hockey in general.
If you wanted to start playing hockey, the first thing is that you have to know how to skate. If you don't know how to, then you're going to have to take lessons. Defense have to good at skating backwards. Then you're going to have to sign up for a team that's your age group. This won't be all that easy considering the fact they've probably been playing since they were 4 like my brother. Don't forget about checking, too. When my brother started checking, he was scared out of his mind and was almost ready to quit.
So, lessons first, then get on a hockey team. I regret not going through with ice hockey when I was little. I still have the chance, but money is an issue!
