The first to remember is that when you have the same denominator in a fraction, you copy the denominator and do the indicated sum or substraction with the numbers in the numerators:

Ex: 1/3 + 1/3 = .................copy the denominator /3

then add the numerators 1+1=2

So the answer is 2/3

When you have different denominators, you calculate the Least Common Multiple.

For ex. yours above

1/2 - 1/3.................2 and 3 LCM= 2 times 3= 6

So you say 6 is the LCM..................../6

this is the denominator for the fraction

Now you divide 6 by the first denominator and then you multiply this by the numerator ( 6/2 = 3 times 1 equal 3)

tHEN YOU DO THE SAME WITH THE SECOND DENOMINATOR
(6/3=2 times 1equals 2)

Lets put everything together

(3 - 2 )/6= 1/6

Thats all you do!!!!

Find the same denominator:
2 = 2
3 = 3
--------------------
The LCM of 2 and 3 is:
2 x 3
= 6

1/2 = (1 x 3)/(2 x 3) = 3/6
1/3 = (1 x 2)/(3 x 2) = 2/6

1/2 - 1/3
= 3/6 - 2/6
= 1/6

1/2 - 1/3=3/6-2/6=1/6

Method 1
3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6

Method 2
3 - 2
--------
6

---
6

To add or subtract fractions, you have to find a common divider, which is usually done by multiplying them:

1/2 - 1/3 is the same as 3/6 - 2/6

And the result then is 1/6

1. 1/2 - 1/3

--- Here you find what is the lowest number that 2 and 3 when multiplied can both become (in this case it is 6, and this is known as the lowest common multiple).

---Then you multiply the top numbers of each fraction by what you multiplied the bottom of each fraction by, to get the bottom number that you have now.

2. 3/6 - 2/6

---Ignore the bottom now, just subtract the top, leave the bottom as it is!

3. 1/6

find common denominator: 6
adjust the fractions to that denominator: 3/6 - 2/6
add the numerators 1/6
simplify = 1/6
2009-01-02 2:12 pm
1/6
1/2 = 3/6
1/3 = 2/6

you change it to up and down:
1/2
- 1/3
then you change the denominator to the same thing:
3/6
- 2/6
and you get the answer as 1/6.
hope this was helpful!!!!!
