no i guess making friends in facebooks is not that safe because they can see your photos and your status.(and what you see in them in facebook may not be real) try msn or email first will be great. also, u can write better language in emails too(if improving english is one of your purposes.)

another way to make friends are keep an eye on these newspapers like young post(SoutChina Morning Post) or Student Standard, they sometimes give us info of some foreign teenagers.
