Calculate the vapour pressure lowering (in Pa)for a solution of 8.20 g

sucrose ( C12H22O11) in 100 g water, at a temperature at which the

vapour pressure of water is 3.70kPa.

(relative atomic masses: H = 1.0, C=12.0, O=16.0)

Molar mass of sucrose (C­12H22O11) = 12*12+ 1*22 + 16*11 = 342 g mol-1
Molar mass of water (H2O) = 1*2 + 16 = 18 g mol-1
No. of moles of sucrose = 8.2/342 = 0.0240 mol
No. of moles of water = 100/18 = 5.556 mol
Molar fraction of water, XW = 5.556/(0.0240 + 5.556) = 0.9957
Vapour pressure of pure water, PWo = 3.7 kPa = 3700 Pa

Vapour pressure of water over the solution = XWPWo = 0.9957 * 3700 = 3684 Pa
Vapour pressure lowering = 3700 - 3684 = 16 Pa
