There are a number of chickens and coops. If 9 chickens are put into each coop, there are two empty coops left over. If 7 chickens are put into each coop, there are 2 chickens left over. How many chickens and coop in total?

let x be the number of chickens and y be the number of coops.x/9=y-2------(1)
(x-2)/7=y-----(2)
put (2) into (1)
x/9=(x-2)/7-2
x/9-(x-2)/7=-2
7x-9(x-2)/63=-2
-2x+18=-126
-2x=-144
x=72
put x=72 into (2)
y=(72-2)/7
y=70/7
y=10
so there is 72chickens and 10coops
