the order of operations says you must subtract the 32 from both sides first, if you want to solve for C:
F = (9/5)C + 32
F - 32 = (9/5)C
(5/9)(F - 32) = C
2008-12-31 4:53 pm
F = ( 9/5 ) C + 32

( 9/5 ) C = F - 32

C = ( 5/9 ) ( F - 32 )

C = (F - 32) * 5/9
2008-12-31 4:26 pm
F = 9/5(C) + 32
F - 32 = 9C/5
9C = 5(F - 32)
C = 5(F - 32)/9
2008-12-31 4:25 pm
F-32=9/5C
C=5/9(F-32)
2008-12-31 4:16 pm
F = 9/5C + 32
Subtract 32 from both sides:
F - 32 = 9/5C
Divide both sides by 9/5 which is the same as multiplying both sides by 5/9 gives:
5/9(F-32) = C

first subtract 32 from both sides

F-32 = 9/5C

then multiply the recipricol of 9/5 which is 5/9

5/9(F-32) = C

The first person above said that you must subtract 32 first, but that is not true.

It's better to subtract the 32 first, because that might make your calculation easier, but you could easily multiply by 5/9 first, that is divide everything by 9/5 and you will still obtain the right answer. I'll perform the calculation both ways:

F = (9/5)C + 32

F - 32 = (9/5)C

C = (5/9)[F - 32]

2nd way: dividing by 9/5 first:

F = (9/5)C + 32

(5/9)F = C + (32)(5/9)

C = (5/9)F - (5/9)(32) = (5/9)[F - 32]

F=(9/5)C+32
(5/9)F=C+32(5/9) (mult by 5/9)
C=(5/9)(F-32) (subtract 32(5/9) from both sides and factor out the 5/9)
