Does anybody know how to write "Sam" pronounced as "Sum" in cantonese? I've wanted a tattoo of my last name for a really long time and I don't know how to write it. I don't want to ask my parents because they wouldn't approve of me getting a tattoo, but this is what I really want and something I will never regret.

Here's a thought...tell your parents that you've suddenly become very interested in your heritage and want to learn to recognize and write their and your names in Chinese characters.

Don't guess about the right character. You are not picking a name that you want to be called because is sounds pretty, and where you have lots of choices as to which character to use. This is your surname, and it has to be right.

p.s., don't get the tattoo, but do show an interest in your heritage.

Well, there are lots of Cantonese words that sound like "sum": 心, 深, 森, 芯, 琛...By your name "Victoria", I assume you're a girl, so these ones are more likely to be the one you're looking for: 心, 芯, 琛.

Meaning of each of the "sum"s:
心 = heart
æ·± = deep
森 = forest
芯 = center, core of a flower
琛 = treasure

There are lots of ways I hope a good Cantonese speaker can select the best characters
my name in mandarin is jia wen 嘉文, but many people will select 加文 which while correct is not as good a character so make sure to ask for the meaning of the character as well as the sound.
