There are actually two answers to this.

In the US a billion is 1000 millions. but in the rest for the world it can be either 1000 million or a million million. The second form is scientifically correct but the first form has entered significant use through US trade and cultural exports.

In America it's 1000

In England it's 1000000.

We don't agree on what Billion means. The English Billion is the American Trillion.

1 million = 10^6 and 1 billion = 10^9, so dividing, we get:

10^9/10^6 = 10^(9 - 6) = 10^3 = 1000

1 billion = 1,000,000,000
1 million = 1,000,000

1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000
= 1,000

∴ there are 1,000 millions in a billion.
