if you are only going to visit one big city, kinda came-saw-left it's ok, but if you are going to move around the country -- you might not get the tickets... trains and buses will be sold out, as for flights, that will depend on your luck and direction...

Chinese Lunar Year consists of Lunar Months, this is why there are 13 months sometimes...

Spring Festival (春节) is a family holiday thus it's all about getting together and having the meal with relatives, popping up firecrackers and getting some money in red pockets, new clothes, baskets of fruit etc...

I think trains and planes between Jan 26 to 30 should be OK since people are supposed to stay at home with families. But the days before and after this are the worse ones for traveling.

You may find less visitors in some places but of course less people to serve. But there will be fun places too to visit like a "miao-hui".

I would advise against it unless you have this wish to experience the most-crowded conditions you will ever encounter

You'll find yourself stuck at train stations/airports, etc. Starting the week before, many workers in the city travel back home to celebrate the holidays, which can last up to 7 days. Most businesses will be closed from the day before and up until the 3rd or 4th day of the new year, so there won't be much places you can go. I suggest you travel a week or two after the Chinese New Year. You'll still see many of the celebrations and decorations, but because most people are already back to work, things will be a lot more normal.

Be prepared for jam packed station, jam packed planes and trains, and jam packed buses and public transport. Hard to find taxis. And full price air fares.

Not worth it to travel during lunar new year. The best would be to go 1 week before.

Spring Festival(Chinese Lunar Year) is the most important festival in China. People carry out a lot of activities all over the country to welcome the Spring Festival. There are different traditional customs in different parts of China, but the whole family having reunion dinner together in the New Year Eve is indispensable.
Recently a number of foreign friends eager to experience a Chinese Lunar Year. According to the traditional custom, the Spring Festival lasts from the 23rd day of 12th lunar month to the 15th day of 1st lunar month. During this period, a strong Chinese "Nian" flavor is spreading all along the streets. In the wake of booming of inbound tourism in China, a set of tailor-made festivals tour is put forward persistently. I joined in a Chinese family and to learn how to make Jiaozi and some other Chinese snack last year. In spare time, I went to pick up some small gifts for my friends, delicate crafts are excellent in performance and cheap in price.
