故事以「棉衣」事件為中心，一波三折，起伏跌宕。先是閔子騫的孝行引來後母的不悅；由後母的不悅引出「棉衣」事件；「棉衣」事件的拆穿又以一段頗具戲劇性的小插曲 ─「禦車」來展開。故事的結局更出人意料：該受懲罰者不但沒有被懲罰，反而同受害者一起成為慈母孝子。故事的變化，都緊扣在一個「孝」字之上。

通過閔子騫再三忍讓，不計較他人過失，作者為閔子騫刻畫了寬厚仁愛的孝子形象。故事一開始就點明「騫供養父母，孝敬無怠」，後來寫到閔子騫受了莫大的委屈，挨了凍並受到父親的責備，也不作辯解，突出閔子騫恪守孝道的超凡程度。更動人的是子騫處處為他人想，父親要把後母休去，閔子騫想到同父異母的兩個弟弟無母後孤單無依的處境，哭阻止父親，如此胸襟更非一般人所能及。最後大團圓結局：父親受到感動，打消了休妻的念頭，而後母受到的感動更大，從此改過自新。閔子騫的孝子形象，至此可謂非常圓滿。
