痰 is caused by over production of mucus.
there are few types of medicines can inhibit the production of mucus.

Anti-histamine:
eg: chlorpheniramine Maleate (GSL medicine, can buy it anywhere without prescription)
It prevent histamine bind to histamine receptor, thus inhibit the mucus secretion.

sympathomimetics :
eg: pseudoephedrine hydrochloride for oral decongestion in cough
(60 mg) (p, u can buy this medicine from pharmacists without any prescription)
It is a Alpha and Beta adrenoceptor agonist, which is directly bind to the alpha or beta receptor and causes vasoconstriction. These constricted blood vessel inhibit fluid enter the nose and throat. As a result, it decrease the secretion of mucous.

Some medications can directly affect the sputum

Mucolytics:
eg. Mecysteine hydrochloride- Visclair tablet(p)
it can reduce the viscosity of sputum, so patient can cough out the sputum more easy.

Expectorant (bring suptum up):
eg. Ammonium choride, ipecacunaha, squill and quaifensin
it can bring suptum up, patient will feel comfortable

Non- medicine:
Fluid intake ( hydrate the lung and hot drink can have a soothing effect), increase fluid intake around 2 L a day
Mechanism: use fluid to reduce the viscosity of sputum, it is similiar with Mucolytics
