1. The following flow diagram shows the stages involved in the extraction of lead from galena, lead (II) sulphide.

Stage I Stage II
Lead (II) sulphide →→→→→ Lead (II) oxide →→→→→ Lead

(a)
2PbS(s) + 3O2(g) → 2PbO(s) + 2SO2(g)
2PbO(s) + C(s) → 2Pb(s) + CO2(g)

=====
(b)
Molar mass of PbS = 207.2 + 32.1 = 239.3 g mol-1
Molar mass of PbO = 207.2 + 16 = 223.2 g mol-1

2PbS(s) + 3O2(g) → 2PbO(s) + 2SO2(g)
Mole ratio PbS : PbO = 2 : 2 = 1 : 1

No. of moles of PbS = mass/(molar mass) = 337/239.2 = 1.409 mol
No. of moles of PbO = mol x (molar mass) = 1.409 mol
Mass of PbO = 1.409 x 223.2 = 314.5 g
=
