Hi,

1.) y = 3x - 14
y = x - 10

x - 10 = 3x - 14
4 = 2x
x = 2
y = -8

(2,-8) <==ANSWER

2.) y = 2x + 5
y = 6x + 1

6x + 1 = 2x + 5
4x = 4
x = 1
y = 7

(1,7) <==ANSWER

3.) x = y + 7
y = 8 + 2x

y = 8 + 2(y + 7)

y = 8 + 2y + 14

y = 2y + 22

y = -22
x = -15

(-15,-22) <==ANSWER

I hope that helps!! :-)

Merry Christmas!!

y = 3x - 14
y = x - 10

Since y = x - 10 (second equation), substitute this into the first equation, i.e.,

x - 10 = 3x - 14

Combining like terms,

3x - x = 14 - 10

2x = 4

x = 2

For Problems 2 and 3, do the same procedure.

Hope this helps.

Question 1
3x - 14 = x - 10
2x = 4
x = 2
y = - 8

Question 2
2x + 5 = 6x + 1
4x = 4
x = 1
y = 7

Question 3
x - 7 = 8 + 2x
- 15 = x
y = - 22

1) We can write, y = y
i.e. 3x-14 = x-10
i.e. 3x-14-x = -10
i.e. 2x -14 = - 10
i.e. 2x= -10+14
i.e. 2x= 4
i.e. x= 2
Hence y= x-10=2-10 = -8

2) we can write, y = y
i.e. 6x+1= 2x+5
i.e. 6x+1-2x = 5
i.e. 4x+1= 5
i.e. 4x= 5-1
i.e. 4x= 4 So, x = 1
Hence, y= 2x+5= (2*1)+5 = 2+5 = 7

3) We can write, x= y+7
= (8+2x)+7
= 8+2x+7
= 15+2x
i.e. x-2x = 15
i.e. -x= 15
i.e. x = -15

Hence, y= 8+2x = 8+2*(-15)
= 8+(-30)
= 8-30
= -22

1. y= 3x-14
.....y= x-10

3x-14=x-10 (you can set these equal to each other because they both equal y)
-x........-x .....subtract x from both sides

2x-14=-10
....+14..+14....add 14 to both sides

2x = 4...divide each side by two
x=2

y=3x-14 plug the answer you got for x into an equation to solve for y
y= 3(2) -14
y= 6-14
y =-8

y=-8, x=2

2).... y=2x+5
...y=6x+1

2x+5= 6x+1
-2x......-2x
5= 4x +1
-1.........-1
4 = 4x
x =1

y=2x-5
y= 2(1)-5
y=2-5
y=3

y=3, x=1

3).... x=y+7
........y=8 +2x

x= (2x+8) + 7 plug in the y= equation into the first equation
x= 2x+15
-1x= 15
-1......-1 divide by -1
x=-15

x= y+7
-15 = y + 7 plug the x-coordinates into the original equation to solve for y
-7.........-7 subtract 7 from each side
y= -22

y=-22, x=-15

hope to have helped!!!!

1)
y = 3x - 14
y = x - 10

y = 3x - 14
x - 10 = 3x - 14
x - 3x = 10 - 14
-2x = -4
x = -4/-2
x = 2

y = x - 10
y = 2 - 10
y = -8

∴ x = 2 , y = -8

= = = = = = = =

2)
y = 2x + 5
y = 6x + 1

y = 2x + 5
6x + 1 = 2x + 5
6x - 2x = -1 + 5
4x = 4
x = 4/4
x = 1

y = 2x + 5
y = 2(1) + 5
y = 2 + 5
y = 7

∴ x = 1 , y = 7

= = = = = = = =

3)
x = y + 7
y = 8 + 2x

x = y + 7
x - 7 = y
y = x - 7

y = 8 + 2x
x - 7 = 8 + 2x
x - 2x = 8 + 7
-x = 15
x = 15/-1
x = -15

x = y + 7
-15 = y + 7
y = -15 - 7
y = -22

∴ x = -15 , y = -22

1) x=-2
2) x=1
3)x=-15/2

1) substitute y in the firs equation with the second equation.
x-10=3x-14
4=2x
x=2

2) Same stuff
6x+1=2x+5
3x=4
x=4/3

3)same stuff
x=8+2x+7
-15=x
x=-15

In each question you're given 2 eqns with 2 variables total. Solving by substitution is exactly what it says - isolate one variable, and substitute into other eqn.

1). You're given two eqns for y. Since y mush equal to y, the two eqns must be equal also:

y = 3x - 14
y = x - 10
Therefore, 3x - 14 = x -10

Now isolate x to one side to solve:

3x - x = -10 + 14
2x = 4
x = 2

Now sub x back into one of the eqns to solve for y:

y = x - 10 = -8

You should be able to take it from here.

subtract each set of questions
1) 2x = 4 => x = 2; y = -8
2) 4x = 4 => x = 1; y=7
3) x = -15; y = -22
