春節食品(Chinese New Year foods)

意頭菜(symbolic foods)或含吉祥意味的食品,在中國節慶中扮演着重要的角色。
農曆新年象徵新一年的開始,大除夕晚上,中國人會圍爐享用年夜飯(Chinese New Year eve family reunion dinner),吃的多是意頭菜。吃年夜飯時,不能把魚吃光,以取「年年有餘」之意;吃年糕(nin go)象徵「年年高升」;吃「蓮子甜湯」(lotus seed desert soup)是取蓮子的諧音「連子」,象徵「年生貴子」;吃枯子(mandarin)則象徵「大吉」,生菜(lettuce)取「生財」、鯉魚(carp)有「大利」的意思。有些家庭還會吃餃子(dumplings),因餃子形似元寶,吃餃子可取「招財進寶」之意。

賀年食品包括糕點 (puddings)、煎堆 (sesame balls)、油角 (crispy triangles)、糖乾果 (sweeteneddried fruits)、瓜子(melon seeds)、臘味(preserved meat)及海味 (dried seafood)。

香港人一般新年食品的English:

糕點(puddings):年糕(nin go), 蘿蔔糕(Chinese turnip cake), 芋頭糕(taro cake)

煎堆(sesame balls)、油角(crispy triangles)

乾果 ( dried fruits) :糖蓮子(sweetened dried lotus seeds)、糖蓮藕(sweetened dried lotus root)、開心果(pistachios)、瓜子(melon seeds)、花生(peanuts)、桂圓(dried longan),冬菇(dried Chinese mushroom)

臘味(preserved meat):臘腸(preserved Chinese sausage)、臘鴨(preserved duck)、臘肉(preserved pork)

海味 (dried seafood):干鮑鱼(dried paua)、干瑶柱(dried scallop)、蝦米(dried shrimps)、海參(dried sea cucumber)、魚翅(shark's fin)、花膠(dried fish maw)

* Lotus seed - signify having many male offspring
* Ginkgo nut - represents silver ingots
* Black moss seaweed - is a homonym for exceeding in wealth
* Dried bean curd is another homonym for fulfillment of wealth and happiness
* Bamboo shoots - is a term which sounds like "wishing that everything would be well"
* Fresh bean curd or tofu is not included as it is white and unlucky for New Year as the color signifies death and misfortune.





Other foods include a whole fish, to represent togetherness and abundance, and a chicken for prosperity. The chicken must be presented with a head, tail and feet to symbolize completeness. Noodles should be uncut, as they represent long life.





In south China, the favorite and most typical dishes were nian gao, sweet steamed glutinous rice pudding and zong zi (glutinous rice wrapped up in reed leaves), another popular delicacy.





In the north, steamed-wheat bread (man tou) and small meat dumplings were the preferred food. The tremendous amount of food prepared at this time was meant to symbolize abundance and wealth for the household.
