What is a nice city in Japan?

I know Tokyo, but im looking for a city that isn't to far from Tokyo(maybe between one and two hours, thats beautiful, maybe Kyoto, how far is it from tokyo

From Tokyo to Kyoto, it takes around 2 hour and half by bullet train (shinkan-sen).

Kanazawa in Ishikawa prefecture is also beautiful old city.
You can see a lot of historical architectures, gardens, and traditions.
It will take around 4 hours by shinkan-sen from Tokyo, though. (too far?)

I also recommend you to visit Kamakura. It's the closest, yet a beautiful town in Kanagawa prefecture. It'll take around 50mins from Tokyo, and the fare for train is 890yen.
You can enjoy China Town in Yokohama on your way back to Tokyo area.
