When potassium dichromate, sulphuric acid and ethanol are mixed, the reaction starts. The reaction is exothermic and the heat given off would evaporate the unreacted ethanol and the produced ethanal. To avoid such evaporation, the reaction mixture should be cooled down when adding the chemicals.
