The specific heat capacity of a substance is the heat (energy) needed to raise 1 kilogram of the substance by 1 degree Celsius. (In other words, the specific heat capacity of a substance is also the heat (energy) released when 1 kilogram of the substance decreases its temperature by 1 degree Celsius.) For example, the specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J kg-1 oC. This means that 4200 J of heat (energy) is needed to raise 1 kg of water by 1oC.
