世上最長英文字是咩??

在主要的英文字典中，最長的單字是pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis，由45個字母組成，意思應該是一種肺部疾病， 矽肺病。後來研究者認為這是一個騙局. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended context, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim. See the separate article for details.

在1992年出版的Guinness Book of Records一書中，認為「真正最長的單字」應該是由29個字母組成的floccinaucinihilipilification，意為「估計或評定一個東西為無價值/輕蔑」。記錄中這個用法，在1741年有使用過。而最近，這個用法記錄在美國參議院的會議記錄中，由羅伯˙拜爾 [1]說的，還有在白宮Bill Clinton's press secretary Mike McCurry。雖然很諷刺，這是牛津字典第一版中，最長的一個非科技專有名詞的單字。

Antidisestablishmentarianism (十九世紀英國的反政教分離運動)也是其中一個長單字。

在莎士比亞的作品中所出現最長的單字，是在迷失的愛 (Love's Labour's Lost)中的honorificabilitudinitatibus。這是一個很爭議的英文單字 (拉丁文亦是如此)，不過他還是用了。

humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua'a，或稱引金魚，是夏威夷的州魚[1]，由21個字母組成。這也是唯一一個眾所皆知動物名稱的長單字。這個字常常被說比魚還長。

雖然只有十四個字母，sesquipedalian(多音節的)也是個值得注意的字。一個羅馬作家賀瑞斯的作品：詩藝 (Ars Poetica)中用的"nonce word" (只用在特殊領域的特別字彙)所衍生出來的。原文如下："Proicit ampullas et sesquipedalia verba," which means, "He throws aside his paint pots and his words that are a foot and a half long".牛津英語字典的多音節列表(the practice of using words one 和半英尺長的), and further derivations can be created as described in the Constructions section below.
