I definitely saw a lot of them when I traveled to Xi'an in 1999, but last time I went to China (2007) I don't think I saw any, and that included some pretty poor areas (like Shuishiying and Yanbian). However, they are in a different part of the country than Xi'an.

Is the hole really over the butt? I don't recall kids having any trouble peeing with one of those things. I went there on a class field trip with Hong Kong International School and we had a Japanese girl in our group, and a Chinese mother tried to get her kid to pee on the Japanese girl. Poor Japanese girl.

I am sure they are, especially with older people and kids. I am sure you can see them in many cities. But if you want to see people walking around town in them, you'd have to go to smaller towns or villages. People in bigger cities (ie. Beijing, Shanghai) are more fashion-conscious than that.

I thought the hole was in the middle, at least that's why my grandpa told me (stories about "back in my days...")
