Trying to appease what is beautiful in mens' eyes at the time.

It has the exact same connatations as wearing a corset in western countries. Obviously a tiny tiny waist is hazardous to health, moreso than foot-binding, but it's all done in the name of appeasing the desires of men.

Foot binding, the same as high heeled shoes, served the purpose of making it difficult for the female to run. Supposedly if the female could not run, she would be faithful. They didn't think anything about some man coming to her, which is usually what happened.

In Medieval Europe, about the time when China woman stated binding their feet, any suspect of a crime need to be drowned in the water to determine if he/she is guilty. Europeans long thought that the surest way to determine whether or not a man/woman was guilty of a crime, was to tie him up and throw him into a lake that been blessed by a priest. If the “pure” water “accepted” the man—that is, if he drowned—he was proved innocent.

I just wonder why my students in China did not know that ? and I wonder if they can dwell upon it the way you did .

China starts Easter Holidays celebrations now. I wonder why Chinese do not know that the European peasants on medieval manors(the huge estate), paid the rabbits they hunted for their Lords on Easter Sundays. That’s right, the Easter Bunny was eaten by their Lords every Easter Sunday in Europe. This was how Easter started. The Medieval European peasants owed a special tax to their lords every Easter Sunday, and because they lack money, so they have to pay rabbit, or whatever left to them at home if they failed to catch any games, to satisfy their lords.

There were more like that in parallel with the wickedness of foot-binding. And there are things that were worse, much worse, such as European 300 years of selling and buying African slaves. Why did Chinese not mention it and why were they not eager to keep raising it as an issue to condemn the Europeans, we Americans?

Back in those days, the only ones who don't bind their feet are labourers: farmer, fisherman, etc. because you can't do anything if your feet are too tiny. So, tiny feet is a symbol of rich girls. The smaller your feet means the more 'precious' you are and the more you're worth. Rich families will look for girls with the tiniest feet as daughter-in-laws because that means they come from a really well-off family. This thus, encourages them to mate within their own "levels".

Well, the men in that time liked women with small feet because it was considered to be 'sexy'. It was a sign of a woman's beauty. To a certain extent, it also served the purpose of making sure that women remained faithful to their husbands since the bindings prevented them from walking properly.

In a way, it also widened the social standing between men and women. With their bound feet, the women can't do heavy work. The exception came in the form of the Cultural Revolution, when the women with bound feet still had to go work in the fields and all despite their disability, as reward was given relative to the amount of crops produced.
