Magnifying glass to collect sun energy?

I'm doing a school project on nature energy resources. I thought of using a magnifying glass to heat up water to steam which in turn drive some gears and crank shaft and thus spinning a small turbine. But somehow I just could get the water (about 500ml) to heat up fast enough. Is there any other material I could used to collect and concentrate more sun energy to boil sme water?

I saw this years ago, someone used a reflective car sun shade to cook.http://solarcooking.wikia.com/wiki/Windshield_Shade_Solar_Cooker
It says it reached temps of 350degrees.
Let me know how your project turns out..I'm very interested in things like this.

You could use a mirror, or multiple mirrors all aimed at the water.

Step 1: find out what the intensity of sunlight is in watts per square meter. Step 2: Figure out what fraction of a square meter a 1 meter circular magnifying glass is. Step 3: Comvert from watts to BTU.

As pegminer mentioned, you can use mirrors to concentrate the sunlight. The most popular example of this is the 11 MW PS10 station in Seville, Spain:

There is a similar technology as well which does not rely on water to steam conversion, but rather just the simple fact that hot air rises. They heat up air at the base of the system, which rises through a tower and spins an electric turbine. You can read more about those here:

You might do better if you enclosed the water in something black so that more energy is absorbed. You could maybe try adding some ink to the water for the same effect.
Alternatively you could use a liquid with a lower boiling point, but make sure you use something non-toxic/non-flammable.
