x is just there for nothing. Its often there as a "unknown number". For example if you are doing 5x=10, x would equal 2. In this question you just ignore the x. you just do (5-3)+4. You protend x is not there in this question. if you are doing a question like 5x+2=17 then you would have to use x. x for that question that i just showed you is un "unknown number like i said" when a question has a number & a letter next to it, that just simply means that you have to times the number by a "unknown number" which is the x to get the answer. see for that question 5x+2=17 you just do a 5 times something then plus 2 to get the answer 17. the correct answer would be 5 times 3+2. so that means that x=3. i hope i helped man, if you have anymore questions just email me, i know alot about mathematics, more than what you think :)

l5x-3l + 4 = 11
l2xl + 4 = 11
11-4=7
2x = 7
7 / 2 = 3.5
x = 3.5

good Luck!

|5x - 3| + 4 = 11 ..../-4
|5x - 3| = 7
That means:

either
5x-3=7

or
5x-3=-7

In the first case, x=2. In the second case, x=-4/5
2008-12-08 12:24 pm
|5x - 3| + 4 = 11
|5x - 3| = 7
5x -3 = + 7 and 5x -3 = -7
or
x = 2 and x = -4/5
2008-12-08 12:23 pm
(5x - 3) = 11-4 (=7)
5x = 7 + 3 (=10)
x = 10/5
x = 2.

were the |'s meant to be brackets?
otherwise, i have no idea.

| 5x - 3 | = 7

5x - 3 = 7
5x - 3 = - 7

5x = 10
5x = - 4

x = 2 , x = - 4/5
2008-12-08 2:08 pm
|5x - 3| + 4 = 11
|5x - 3| = 11 - 4
|5x - 3| = 7
5x - 3 = ±7

5x - 3 = 7
5x = 7 + 3
x = 10/5
x = 2

5x - 3 = -7
5x = -7 + 3
5x = -4
x = -4/5 (-0.8)

∴ x = -4/5 (-0.8) , 2

Absolute value simply means you take both the Positive and Negative values of the expression.

For your question:
|5x-3| = +(5x-3) AND -(5x-3)

Therefore:
5x-3 = 11-4 AND -5x+3 = 11-4

Get it now?
5x-3 = 7 AND -5x+3 = 7

So:
5x = 10 AND -5x = 4

x=2 AND x = -4/5

I am just curious but isn't it like this.

5x -3 +4 = 11

5x +1 =11

5x+1 -1 = 11 -1

5x = 10

5x over 5 = 10 over five
over means divided by

x = 2

Proving: 5 x 2 -3 + 4 = 11
10 -3 + 4 = 11
7 + 4 = 11
11 = 11
