x is just there for nothing. Its often there as a "unknown number". For example if you are doing 5x=10, x would equal 2. In this question you just ignore the x. you just do (5-3)+4. You protend x is not there in this question. if you are doing a question like 5x+2=17 then you would have to use x. x for that question that i just showed you is un "unknown number like i said" when a question has a number & a letter next to it, that just simply means that you have to times the number by a "unknown number" which is the x to get the answer. see for that question 5x+2=17 you just do a 5 times something then plus 2 to get the answer 17. the correct answer would be 5 times 3+2. so that means that x=3. i hope i helped man, if you have anymore questions just email me, i know alot about mathematics, more than what you think :)
