Why an European put option can never worth more than the strike price?

It is because a European put options holder can sell the underlying asset at the STRIKE PRICE at maturity date. The value of this option equals the strike price of this option minus the underlying asset's market price or zero, whether the greater. Therefore, the maximum value of the Europoean put option equals the strike, if and only if the underlying asset's price drop to zero.
