5[12 - (6 - 3a) - 2a] = 2(1 - a)
5[12 - 6 + 3a - 2a] = 2*1 - 2*a
5[6 + a] = 2 - 2a
30 + 5a = 2 - 2a
2a + 5a = 2 - 30
7a = -28
a = -28/7
a = -4

A question well presented.

5 [ 6 + 3a - 2a ] = 2 - 2a

30 + 5a = 2 - 2a

7a = - 28

a = - 4

First, expand the brackets:

5[12 - 6 + 3a -2a] = 2(1-a)

Then, cancel on the left:

5[6 + a] = 2(1-a)

And multiply out:

30 + 5a = 2 - 2a

Move the a's to the left, numbers to the right:

7a = -28

and divide numbers by multiples of 'a':

a = -28/7 = -4

Check by putting it all back together:

5[12 - (6 - 3*-4) - 2*-4] = 5 * 2 = 10
2(1- -4) = 2 * 5 = 10

5[12 - (6 - 3a) - 2a] = 2(1 - a)

5(12 - 6 + 3a - 2a) = 2 - 2a

5(6 + a) = 2 - 2a

30 + 5a = 2 - 2a

7a = -28

a = -4
