wordpress VS Joomla ,,, is it the same ? whats the difference , who is better and why?

hi all ,
i am a new webmaster, and want to create my own website, but i know nothing about programming , so my friends advised me to go with ready build dynamic websites.

some of them that i should search and learn more about joomla ,, others say you must learn how to control wordpress website ,,,

my question is simply whats the difference ,,
can you please explain what the "wordpress" stands for"

tried seaching google but honestly didn't understand much

Both are CMS (content management systems). WordPress started out as a blog platform, but because it's so versatile many people use it for non-blog personal websites. Joomla is more a community-geared CMS, it's module-based.

So, it all depends on what type of website are you trying to create. If you're building a portfolio website (ie. all you need is About, Portfolio, Contact and probably a couple other static pages), then I'd say go with WordPress and instead of writing posts, you'll be writing pages.

However, if you're building a website where you'll also need client login, billing system, etc., then you might want to look into Joomla and its modules.
