Want to become a pro web designer..?

Hi, I have been fooling around with web design for almost a yr now and really really love doing it. I have learned css, html, and am in the process of learning javascript. I would really love to be good enough at this to someday be able to create forums..e-commerce sites, and do sites for other people. Several people have asked me to build sites for them already, but the problem is that I feel my design skills are still lacking. My sites are equivalent to a lot of sites out there, but I want them to be better. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to become the best web designer I can be?

On the Design side - learn some graphics programs to create/edit graphics for your website(s). Photoshop for raster images and Coreldraw for vector. You can also learn Flash to create 2D animations and such.If you want to get into the development side of things - you will need to know some database and Server Side Scripting. MySQL goes with PHP and MsSQL Server goes with ASP.

Check out sites made by professionals, for example, http://coolhomepages.com. See what other web designers are doing, how they uses graphics, layouts, colors, effects, etc. Seeing and understanding what others are doing is the fastest way to develop your own design sense. Check out sites that you like and ask yourself what appeals to you most, etc.

You must have heard of the saying "Practice makes a man perfect". That's all you need to do..keep applying your skills and develop sites. In that process you will learn new skills also, and eventually you will be competent to be a professional web developer.
P.S., if you want to become a professional developer, you will need demos and some sort of a portfolio to show with your resume. Work on something in that direction, and create some impressive demos!
