There are many different ways to protect (encrypt) your data. Microsoft has a way to do this built into windows. You can follow the steps to do so in detail here:

You can download this toolkit to encrypt your information so its safe when you send it to someone else... and so that no one else is able to read it but you... or someone you trust to view it.
