You can guess and check.
Guess: 3
Check: 6*3 = 18 ... so 3 doesn't work because 18 is too big. So now you know the number is smaller than 3

Guess:2
Check: 6*2 = 12 ... This number is good!

So now, you have 12, but the numerator is 17. So how many is leftover? 17-12 = 5. So there's 5 left over.

Then your mixed fraction is:
2 5/6

I don't know of a term called a mixed fraction. There is the "improper fraction", which 17/6 already is. Or you might mean to express 17/6 as a "mixed number" ( a whole number and a fraction).
If that is what you are trying to do, remember this simple thing:
the "/" line in a fraction means literally "divided by".
So to convert 17/6 to a mixed number, it is
17 divided by 6 or:
2 5/6

If you are confused which number goes inside the box and which goes outside, this is what I tell my students out here in California where we have "IN & OUT" hamburger stands.
Remember your favorite hamburger "IN and OUT"
The top number goes IN (the box) and the bottom number goes OUTside (the box). It actually helps some kids remember how to set up a division problem. Of course if your favorite hamburger is the Big Mac, this is of no value!
