It is about people( teams) exploring in some extremely cold places(-79 degrees Celsius for e.g.)
such as Antarctic and Alelie land.

Based on the verb "to winter" = to spend the winter

I wintered out in America last year .<----------( I wintered in America last year)

The hyphen is optional.
