A student heated 4 g sodium metal with excess sulphur until no further reaction occurred. The mass of the sodium increased to 9.56 g, and the appearance changed from a shiny silver to a dull white.

Please work out the formula of the white solid?
更新1:

✔ 最佳答案

Molar mass of Na = 23 g mol-1
Molar mass of S = 32 g mol-1

In the dull white solid formed:
Mass of Na = 4 g
Mass of S = (9.56 - 4) = 5.56 g

Mole ratio Na : S
= 4/23 : 5.56/32
= 0.174 : 0.174
= 1 : 1

The formula of the white ash = NaS
