Easy Math Question (simplify)... does this look right?...?

2008-11-12 8:05 am
So here's the question I got.

16 + 28 ÷ 2 - 6
---------------------
10 - 4 x 2

Now the answer I get is 1.3 repeating.

But here is the multiple choice answers they offer:
A. 10
B. 8
C. -2.4
D. -4.8

Now I know it is midnight and my brain might have fried but anyone out there with a conclusive answer plz respond. Thx!!!

Are you sure that you posted the question correctly? Is there any bracket somewhere? Because I got 12 as answer.

16 + 28 ÷ 2 - 6
---------------------
10 - 4 x 2

= 16 + 14 - 6
---------------------
10 - 8

=30 - 6
---------------------
2

=24
---------------------
2

= 12

I get 12
2008-11-12 9:11 am
(16 + 28 ÷ 2 - 6)/(10 - 4 x 2)
= (16 + 14 - 6)/(10 - 8)
= (30 - 6)/2
= 24/2
= 12

You got 1.3 repeating, because you didn't follow the rule that ÷ and x must be done before + and -.
If you follow the rule the answer is 12.

It's pretty easy once you get to know it. Lol, BODMAS is like, an english way; PEMDAS:

P=Parenthesis
E=Exponents
MD= Multiplication and Division
AS= Addition and Subtraction

Is the american way that I got taught. And yeah, it is 12.

You must use order of operations. BEDMAS.

Brackets - none
Exponents - note
Division/Multiplication - compute numerator and denominator seperately
Addition/Subtraction as the last thing.

Numerator:
divide 28 by 2. = 14. Then add 16, then subtract 6. = 24

Denominator
4x2 = 8
10 minus 8 = 2

Fraction 24/2 = 12

From the question you've written, the answer should be 12.

Your teacher/test question/text book is wrong. If it's a text book, this happens to sell new editions with corrected mistakes and more errors, so the students in future years will have to buy a new edition. Some teachers get kickbacks from textbook companies.

In any event, check the question. Are there brackets? Do those first.

Wow. I'm actually on Yahoo answers answering math questions at midnight. Ouch.

i got 12 accORDING to BODMAS - brackets,off,division,multiplication.addition,subtraction is the general rule

I get 12 as well.

According to Bedmas, the top should be 28/2 = 14, +16 = 30, - 6 = 24.
The bottom looks like 4 x 2 = 8, 10 - 8 = 2.

Which gives you 24/2. I get 12. =/

I get 12 also

LOL, Bodmas, Bedmas, Pemdas, LOOLLL...

I'd rather use brackets rather than guessing for anything above.

What if I write

16 + 28 ÷ 2 - 6 ÷ 10 - 4 x 2

So now you divide 6 and 10?

16 + 14 - 0.6 - 8 = 21.4

Ouch.. gross...!!

Where's that 12 come from?

=))

Prioritize to use sets of brackets, no matter what kind of calculation you do.

================================
Solution.

There will be only one method for this, trial and error by bracketing unit per unit.

Good luck with it.

Regards.

Edit: for xxxdas believer.
What if I pop a question?
Please expand this factor: x+3.x+4

He he he ...
