Yep. I had this same issue for so long, but I finally worked out how to achieve it. All you need to do is go to "edit profile" and where it says "myspace editor" you select that - and you can make your own theme via the myspace editor. Just put your background image url into that editor, and save it, (recreate your theme if you so want to) - and save, and whalah! presto! when you go back to your private profile, it will now display your background image on your private section.
Just to let you know, that it is a good idea to clean out your code first, before you make any changes through the myspace editor, as it can get very messy, but do remember to save the urls to the images on your theme so you don't lose them! hope this helps...
