Do opposite function of the know number so if

6x + 9 = 2x + 7
6x + 2 = 2x
2 = -4x
x = -(1/2)

6x + 9 = 2x + 7

minus 2x both sides so

4x + 9 = 7

minus 9 both sides so

4x = -2

divide by 4 both sides so

x = -1/2

-.5

4x = - 2
x = - 1/2

Bring like terms onto one side
6x-2x=7-9
simplify
4x= -2
divide both sides of the equation by 4
4x/4= -2/4
simplify
x= -1/2 (which in decimal figures is -0.5)
